ICE-D workshop: COSMO2026 @ CEREGE - Aix-en-provence June 15, 2026

Objective

We aim to expand the community of people who can contribute to and work with the ICE-D database and infrastructure by inviting any individuals attending COSMO2026 to this pre-conference ICE-D workshop. We will be giving an overview of the ICE-D Project, an introduction to how the data are organized, and describing methods to access and work with the data. In addition, this is an opportunity to ask questions of the developers. The goal will be for attendees to know enough about the project to (i) organize their own data in a way that is compatible with incorporation into the database, and (ii) understand enough about how to access the data to get some ideas about how ICE-D data could be used in their research.

For more information about the ICE-D project, please visit the Top level page of this wiki

For any other queries, please feel free to email Greg (balcs@bgc.org) and/or Joe (jtulenko@bgc.org)

Ideally, attendees will come away from the workshop with the following:

1) Enough knowledge of how the ICE-D database and associated software works to understand how to organize newly collected data for later inclusion in the database.

2) Some ideas about what visualizations, applications and analyses are possible with this tool and what software/skills you need to make them happen.

Topics

– How the infrastructure is set up

– A brief introduction to how relational databases are set up

– How to view the raw data tables and understand the general organizational concept

– A brief introduction to how to get data out of the database using desktop software

Workshop Location

The workshop location and details are on the COSMO2026 website:

Pre-workshop preparations/tasks

Step 1: We will use a few minutes at the beginning of the workshop for introductions. Come prepared with a brief bio about yourself; what are your interests, current projects you are working on, and what you are hoping to learn at the workshop.

Step 2: We expect that most of the workshop attendees will bring their own laptops to the workshop and want to connect to the database. To do this, it is necessary to install some software and set up some security credentials. Specifically, you will need to install a MySQL client and send us a SSH key. For best time management, it is extremely helpful if everyone connecting to the database follows the instructions linked below and sends us an SSH key for their personal laptop ahead of the workshop. It is possible to do this at the workshop, but it will waste valuable time in what is already a very short schedule.

Find the tutorials for connecting to the database through SQL Clients here: Windows Users | Mac and Linux Users

If you are interested in the GIS interface to ICE-D data, please have some sort of GIS software (typically Arc or QGIS) operating on your computer.

Step 3: If you have some data that is either your newly generated data, or some literature data that is not yet in the ICE-D database, bring it with you. We may have time for an exercise in organizing data for inclusion in the database.
