This page contains some notes on less common data entry cases.

Notes on Cl-36 data entry

-- Major element chemistry data is stored as weight percents of elements, not as oxide percents as reported for XRF analyses. Thus, XRF data need to be converted to weight percents of each element. We decided to do it this way because data are collected both ways, and the straight weight percent is a simpler and less ambiguous way to represent chemistry data. Sorry.

Adding data to ICE-D from the Admin Page

In this tutorial we will be teaching users our best practices for adding data to ICE-D through the admin
page on the ICE-D website. In the past, we had folks from the community add data directly to the database
through SQL clients such as Heidi and Sequel Pro, but users will now be adding data in excel spreadsheet
format (other formats also available) to a page on the ICE-D website! We are hoping this will streamline
the data entry process for ICE-D.

Here are some examples we have come up with so far. Please email any of us on the project Greg Balco, Ben Laabs, and/or Joe Tulenko with your ideas so we can add them to the list!

MATLAB database connectivity for Mac (and also Linux, it is basically the same)

This page has instructions for how to connect MATLAB to the ICE-D MySQL database on a *nix system.

Basically, this has two parts.

First, configure the database connectivity aspects of MATLAB. Once you have done this, MATLAB can function as a MySQL client just as HeidiSQL, Sequel Pro, MySQL workbench, etc., with the added benefit that you can include database queries in MATLAB scripts.

Science applications

The whole point of the ICE-D project is to enable synoptic applications of large amounts of cosmogenic-nuclide data. Here are some examples.

ICE-D:ANTARCTICA

Antarctic deglaciation in one figure: a blog posting by Greg Balco that summarizes Holocene exposure-age data from Antarctica to highlight the fact that nearly all LGM-to-present ice sheet thinning in Antarctica appears to have taken place in only a few thousand years in the early to middle Holocene.
