An analysis layer is something that uses the results of middle-layer calculations to display or visualize data or to do some kind of an analysis.

The ice-d.org web server is an analysis layer. It displays exposure ages for a particular site or sample.

What is the data layer?

The data layer is the layer that holds observable data.

The background.

Greg Balco started this project in 2014 as an experiment in managing sample information and exposure-age data from an Antarctic field project in the Pensacola Mountains involving enough samples -- about 250 -- that using spreadsheets and the online exposure age calculator became a serious headache. At this point, the projected cost of the Google cloud computing services that provide the database management and computational back end for the project was somewhere between zero and…

Middle layer

The middle layer contains the calculations needed to turn raw observational data into some kind of useful geologic information.

For exposure-age dating, it is the calculations needed to compute an exposure age from a nuclide concentration measurement and related data about the sample location, etc., etc.

This page covers some of the overall principles that the project is trying to implement. In part this page is here to answer questions about what the rules or policies of the project are. Most of these have to do with the fact that the ICE-D databases are more informal than conventional scientific data archives and are pretty vague about how data get in the databases, and what you are supposed, or not supposed, to do with them once they are there. Thi…

This wiki is the documentation for the ICE-D database project, whose purpose is to organize and work with data having to do with Earth science applications of cosmogenic-nuclide geochemistry. If you know what that means, you're in the right place.

Transparent Middle Layer (TML) data management infrastructure

The ICE-D project is an attempt to implement a so-called 'transparent middle layer' data management and software infrastructure for cosmogenic-nuclide data. If the problem is that it's hard to do synoptic analysis of a data set that is changing all the time as middle-layer calculations evolve, our idea is that the solution has the following elements:
